Principal Muir's February Letter

Dear St. Anastasia Families,

Pope Francis’s Hand Prayer - 1.) The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. 2.) The next finger is the index. Pray for those w,ho teach you, instruct you and heal you. 3.) The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors and those who have authority. They need God's guidance.  4.) The fourth finger is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those plagued by problems. 5.) And finally we have our smallest finger. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself.

The first couple of weeks in February have been very busy, filled with exciting school events and activities.  Our much anticipated school musical Annie Jr. was a tremendous success to the delight of our entire community. The Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team won their first two playoff games and have earned a spot in the Elite Eight round of the CYO playoffs next weekend.  Finally, our brand new robotics team earned eighth place among more than fifty teams at a Legoland competition this past weekend.

As we reach the midpoint of February it is a good time to check your children’s progress through Gradelink.  The teachers have worked to bring everything up to date to give you a good indication of your child’s current progress.  If you need assistance signing into gradelink, please contact Mrs.Schmidt in the school office or via email at lschmidt@st-anastasia.org.

Every year the St. Anastasia Parish Ball Live auction begins with a special school project. This year's project features improvements to our sports field and we have named it Home Field Advantage! The goal is to expand the grass area of the field and essentially "square" it off to make a regulation size "B" and "C" level athletic playing field. The advantages to this project include the ability to play "B" and "C" level "HOME" football and soccer games allowing for the community and after school care kids to watch and cheer on their Panthers, as well as the potential to rent out the field to community sports clubs such as AYSO and garner extra funds for the school. The new field will benefit every child at St. Anastasia, not just our sports teams, during P.E. and recess. Currently, the field bustles with active play every day and the added square footage will encourage more fun and games and give the kids some additional breathing room. The impact to the school will be minimal. Only a couple of parking spaces will be lost and the drop off and pick up line will need to be slightly rerouted.

As I mentioned in an email on Friday,  St. Anastasia Parish has made arrangements for summer camp to be held at St. A's with an established camp program, Iverbe.  The program will run eight weeks from June 19th through August 11th.   You can check out their website at this link: https://iverbe.com.  St. A's students will receive a discounted rate of $250 per week.  In order to get the St. A's discounted rate you will need to use the discount code "anastasia”.  The Iverbe Camp will not impact Vacation Bible School, or our own academic summer school sessions.

This Wednesday we will mark Black History Month when we host a performance by the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. This troupe is brought to us through the Music Center and performs diverse styles ranging from West African, Afro-Cuban, and street-dance form to abstract modern pieces.  The troupe is committed to teaching about African American history, feelings, and everyday occurrences through dance.  Lula Washington has also worked on the choreography for films and musicals including The Lion King.

Please be sure to join us for the Parish Ball, our most significant community building and fundraising event of the year on Saturday, March 4th at the Westin LAX Airport Hotel.  The organizing committee has been working hard all year, the gift gathering parties are well underway, and it’s time to get your tickets.  Please visit the event website at https://stanasta.ejoinme.org/PB2017 for more information.  Thanks so much for your support.

Have a blessed and healthy month ahead with your families.

Sincerely,

Mike Muir
Principal
