• Dear Parents!
Surprise!  I thought I would start writing my Sunday letters on line as well as send the to you!  My laptop crashed with all my stuff on it, so I needed a place to start!  We had quite a busy week at St. Anastasia!!  From Back to School night to our awesome mass this morning!  What a great day!  I look forward to a more -- dare I say it -- calm week!
In Religion we are focusing on God's love for us -- through Jesus Christ!  We will also start learning the Act of Contrition -- yep getting ready for Reconciliation already!! Which reminds me:  we have a small correction to the calendar which was in your child's folder!  Banners are due and First Eucharist rehearsal is set for WEDNESDAY, MAY 3!  Thanks Jen for catching that!  Math is concluding Chapter 2 and Unit 1!  We will start Chapter 3 next week!  We have our Guided Reading groups in place -- this week we are going to learn how to read a book, reflect on what we are reading, readers response, and start working on comprehension questions -- how we find the information!  Spelling, Handwriting, Phonics, and English are continuing along smoothly!  Remember to check your child's work at night not only to make sure it is done, but to check if they understand the material!  Social Studies begins with neighborhoods AND finally we will begin working on 2nd grade IXL on the iPads!
A short word about Words Their Way word study approach and the Common Core!  IT'S ALL ABOUT WORD KNOWLEDGE!
Words Their Way is a developmentally based approach to word study---phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction (IT'S ALL INTERCONNECTED!).  This approach reflects the research exploring the developmental nature of word knowledge -- how awareness and understanding of word structure at the alphabetic, pattern, and meaning levels successively build upon one another!  Students' efficient, fluent, and meaningful engagement with text depends upon their understanding of the ways in which letters in printed words represent this information about language -- its sounds, structure, and meaning!
Words Their Way supports the Common Core State Standards and also supports the emphasis on students' reading more complex literary and informational texts!
Our feeling words for this week are:  quiet, stubborn, unkind, bored respect, curious!
I think that's it for today!  God Bless and have a beautiful week!
    Ms. Scaltrito
